On Thursday morning we flew from Adelaide to Kangaroo Island. We were surprised to learn on the way to the airport that Mexico is in South America!

The Adelaide airport is fairly large, and there was actually a line to go through security–it took us about ten minutes. There are two ways to get here–ferry or a very short flight on a very small plane from Adelaide (one or two flights per day). We flew because it was cheaper and faster. There is no public transportation and no cabs or rideshares on the island, so you have to either rent a car or book a transfer to your hotel ahead of time. We did the latter because we are taking guided tours while we’re here, so we don’t need a car.
We had nothing planned for our arrival day, so we took a walk around Kingscote, the tiny town our hotel is in, and sat for awhile enjoying the gorgeous view of the Southern Ocean.

The public pool in Kingscote is an actual tidal pool!

At dusk we went to the pier across the street from our hotel to see the pelicans. Apparently a town resident held a nightly pelican feeding show for many years on the pier. He stopped doing it in 2017, but the pelicans are still in the habit of showing up every evening. They did not disappoint!

It was then time for dinner. Luckily I had read that you need to have a reservation for dinner in this town and made reservations for each night–we did see people without reservations being turned away, and I believe there are only four places open for dinner.
Friday and Saturday we have all-day tours scheduled. We can’t wait to explore more of this beautiful island!
