The blue Mountains

We spent Wednesday taking a tour to the Blue Mountains. We were honestly not sure if we wanted to spend a day doing the tour; after all, we’ve spent several days in a few different mountain ranges already. But we’d heard from several people that it was worth doing, and it is one of the “must do” Sidney activities, so we went for it. It ended up being a great day.

We drove about an hour west of Sydney–luckily opposite rush hour traffic–and first stopped at Echo Point to see the rock formation called the Three Sisters and then drove a short way and took a short walk to a waterfall. Beautiful views at both places, especially because the weather was perfect. Apparently the day before it was really foggy and no one could see anything.

Next, we went to a place called Scenic World. It has two cable car rides with views of the mountains and down to the valley and the steepest passenger railway in the world which is, indeed, very steep. We rode all three and took a nice walk through the rainforest. To be honest, I thought it would be a bit lame, but it was really fun!

Next, we went to a cute little town for lunch. Our last stop was at a wildlife park, basically a small zoo that just had Australian animals. Neither of us was particularly excited about that stop, having seen most of the animals in the wild, but, weirdly, all of the tours to the Blue Mountains included it. We did see some really cool birds there and saw an echidna up close.

Rather than waiting in rush hour traffic, the tour guide dropped us off at the Olympic Village ferry terminal and we took the ferry to Circular Quay and walked to Darling Harbour for a fish and chips dinner. Yum!

Next up: We are (gulp!) climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Are we crazy? Perhaps.
